MLK Day of Service

For over a decade, PSJC has honored the memory of Dr. Martin Luthor King by spending the day giving back to the community.  Every year, over 100 community members - adults and children - come together to volunteer on many, many projects.  Activities typically include making shelf-stable soup kits, putting together hygiene kits for the Brooklyn Family Justice Center, sorting books and clothing for donation, knitting and crocheting preemie caps and baby blankets, participating in letter-writing campaigns in support of refugees, making meals to stock the PSJC freezer, and so much more.

11th Annual MLK Day of Service THIS SUNDAY, January 19th, 2020

Life's most urgent question is: What are you doing for others?  - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

PSJC's Annual MLK Day of Service is a wonderful way for us to come together as one to give back to our community and those beyond our walls.  Come join us!

Who should come?
You, your family, and your friends; this event is for all ages and a great way to do community service together!

What time?
The event will start at 11am and end at 2pm. Arrive any time you are able, and stay for as long as you can.

Can I Bring Something?  Yes! If you have any of these items, please bring them:

  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Gently used clothing (nothing torn or stained please).  We especially need clothing that is appropriate for interviewing
  • Gently used books
  • Hygiene products.

MLK Day Of Service: Gratitude for the Multitude

4000+ servings of shelf-stable soup. 100s of portions of baked ziti, chili, chickpea stew and quiche for the shul freezers. 500 PB&J sandwiches. Hundreds of snack kits and toiletry kits for the Family Justice Center; two dozen boxes of kids' books for Brooklyn Legal Aid; dozens of gorgeous "stained-glass" crafts, hand-made for God's Love We Deliver; knitted washcloths for the FJC; dozens and dozens of bags of used clothing; almost 200 letters in support of refugee rights. This great work would never have happened without the nearly 200 volunteers who came out on a cold and soggy day to "pray with our hands" and work together for a better Brooklyn.

Sincere thanks to the MLK Working Group and volunteers: Florence Hutner, Grace Kerr, Carol Levy, Esther Schwalb, Julia Birnbaum, Amy Sandgrund, Renanit Levy, Leslie Salzman, Marjorie Rothenberg, Lynda Kaplan, Jane Dorlester, Anna Newcombe, Laura Wolff, Rachel Danzing, Sarah Josephson, Aileen Heiman, the amazing Abby Moskowitz (staffing the cooking station for her first MLK Day) and Dina Nadler, who, as a most welcome addition to MLK leadership, brings extraordinary warmth and down-to-earth smarts.

With gratitude for our community, and to our intrepid
shleppers, we thank all who participated!! Here's to 2020!

MLK Day of Service  2017

Sunday, January 15 | 11:00AM
with 'Learn-in' from 2-3

Please help us gather gently-used children’s books; kids, infants, women’s and men’s clothing; coats; new socks; toiletries and your energy for a busy, productive MLK Day of Service at PSJC. We're aiming to top last year's work -- that means more than 2,000 soup-kit servings, for starters -- AND we're adding two informal workshops, on local politics (how to navigate and get involved) and talking with young people about the political landscape. These workshops will be informal and led by friends and members of the PSJC community. Simple snacks will be provided; RSVPs strongly encouraged (so we know how much to order) to hzelon@gmail.com. Thank you for your dedication and hard work!

MLK Day of Service 2016

Sunday, January 17 | 10:00AM

At PSJC we have a tradition of a community-wide day of service. We provide opportunities within our walls and at agencies within the Brooklyn community.

We have a few things we do every year that include: making meals to put in the freezer for PSJC members in need, creation of Just Add Water soup kits to be given to food pantries, children's book collection for the Brooklyn Justice Center, a knitting circle that makes blankets for people in need, snack packs for the Brooklyn Justice Center, Food drive for CAMBA and clothing drive for a local shelter.

For more information email Helen.
