About the Event

Today we concluded 10 weeks of daily Israeli poetry classes and are looking forward to the 11th week.  It will have only four sessions as Thursday is the eve of Shavuot. Here is the program for the coming week; Sunday May 24 Through the Eyes of the Other II Arab Israeli citizens are over 20% of Israel’s population – the literature they write both in Hebrew and Arabic is rich in its poetics and content. It is not always easy to read. It is not meant to make us feel good, it is here to make us listen to different voices and parallel narratives. They are all legitimate parts of the Israeli mosaic. Monday May 25th Justice I – Since when do we know Israel is a Democracy? This is the first of a series of three lectures, all dealing with important trials that took place in the early years of Israel. They all left their mark on who we are. The first one deals with literary reaction to issues of freedom of speech in the famous Kol Haam Trial of 1953 Tuesday May 26th Justice II – Black Flag In October 1956, on the eve of the Sinai Campaign, the IDF killed 47 unarmed civilians in the village of Kfar Qasim for being 30 minutes late for the curfew orders. The trial that followed had changed the IDF code of ethics. Let us find out what is an order over which a black flag is flying? Wednesday March 27th 6000000 Prosecutors The trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem in 1961 was a watershed event that marked Israeli society for ever. We will discuss the relevant literary texts as our great poets; Alterman and Guri are facing the Glass Booth. We will also have with us former Mossad Agent Avner Abraham to share the story of the capture of Eichmann. I cannot think of a more meaningful way to conclude this phase of our project. This session will be 30 minutes longer: 60 minutes – Rachel’s literature presentation. To be followed by a 45 minutes presentation by Avner Avraham who is a former Mossad agent, a renowned expert on Mossad operations and famously worked to reveal and publicize the story of the historic 1960 capture of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann. He will share insights, artifacts and how the trial came to be portrayed in the Hollywood film ‘Operation Finale’.  The link remains the same https://zoom.us/j/92631505585?pwd=TVBibkpRc1JXYURCYlFpOFI3MlB5Zz09 And so are the hours; 11:00 am Pacific, 2:00 pm east coast, 19:00 London, 21:00 Jerusalem.
