The increasing coverage on the Israel–Gaza conflict predominantly depicts men in images of authority, power, and leadership. In an eye-opening exposé for The Atlantic*, Dr. Elana Maryles Sztokman raises the question: Where are the images of women in power? She writes: “they were often seen eulogizing, mourning, or struggling to reconcile with their reality. The images capture a sobering fact: Women in the region are suffering terribly from the consequences of decisions from which they are excluded.”

In her new book, The War on Women in Israel, Dr. Sztokman brings the discussion of the religiously motivated curtailment of women’s rights in Israel to the forefront. It’s the story of religious radicalism taking hold today in Israel, and the ways in which the voice of radical Judaism has been threatening women’s lives. It tells the story of gender segregation on buses, the removal of women from newspapers and advertising, violence against women for the way they dress, Women of the Wall, reproductive rights, divorce, conversion, and more. “If one point becomes clear from this entire book,” writes the author, “it is how much separation from women is increasingly a key element of identity for religious men.”

The first full-length discussion of this alarming reality, The War on Women in Israel weaves together interviews and investigative research, and proposes solutions for creating a different, more egalitarian vision for religious culture both in Israeli society and around the world. *The Atlantic -August 7, 2014
